If you’re new to PEMF, you may wonder if there are any PEMF therapy side effects to know about. It’s a good question to ask whenever starting any new medical treatment. Being informed about your treatment options can help you make better decisions for your health and wellness, and avoid the potentially dangerous side effects of harsher medical regimens.
Here’s what you need to know about PEMF therapy side effects.
Are There Any Pemf Therapy Side Effects?
No. With proper use of a Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) device, such as a PEMF mat, there are no adverse PEMF therapy side effects. This is what makes it a popular alternative to other pain-relief and anti-inflammation treatments, such as prescription medications, surgeries or acupuncture, each of which have the potential for adverse side effects.
A medical research study highlighted in Bioelectromagnetics (a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Wiley-Liss) conducted a systematic review of several medical trials that investigated the therapeutic effects of low-frequency PEMF therapy devices. In total, 11 randomized, double-blind trials were reviewed and the researchers found that no acute adverse effects have been reported.
PEMF therapy is thus a safe and effective treatment option for:
- Pain and inflammation
- Sleep disorders
- Lack of energy and vitality
- Poor blood circulation
- Helping your body heal and regenerate cells
Pemf Therapy Side Effects With Improper Usage
While rare, some PEMF therapy side effects can occur when a PEMF device is used improperly. For example, when using the iMRS Prime or Omnium1, we do not recommend using the system for longer periods of time (i.e. more than an hour), because after your body is charged, it typically stops receiving any benefits. Some people sleep on their PEMF mats, but the appropriate way to use it is 30 minutes before going to sleep, as this approach helps to prepare your body to rest. Unnecessarily prolonged usage can result in minor PEMF therapy side effects such as dizziness, but again this is rare.
Additionally, prolonged usage of a PEMF device that is set at unnecessarily high electromagnetic frequencies can cause similar discomfort. This is why patients should only use high-quality PEMF machines that are easy to adjust and are set to the proper frequencies for their specific medical goals.

Pemf Therapy Side Effects For New Patients
First-time users of a PEMF device will sometimes report feeling tired after a session, though for most people this is a benefit, not an adverse side effect. The feeling of tiredness stems from the cellular detoxification that PEMF therapy delivers – one of the key benefits of using the system. This is also why it is recommended to use the system prior to going to bed, as it can bolster your body’s natural ability to achieve deeper, restorative sleep.
Those who are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields may also feel some discomfort when using a PEMF device for the first time. This discomfort can manifest itself as a prickly sensation or the sensation of warmth or coldness. These reactions are mild and temporary, and they are usually resolved as patients continue using the system.
