The Increasing Role of PEMF in Today's Wellness Centers

role pemf 3

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) is increasingly being used by physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors and other medical practitioners to help patients facing a wide array of health conditions.

Given the holistic nature of PEMF – being non-invasive, drug-free and designed to support the body’s natural healing systems – it’s no surprise that it is increasingly offered at wellness centers around the world. In addition to being an effective healing modality, whether used in conjunction with traditional treatments or as an alternative, PEMF can also be used as part of a patient’s preventative care.

If you are considering adding PEMF to your wellness center or practice, here’s what you need to know.

How PEMF Works

PEMF works by stimulating cellular activity in the body with low-level magnetic energy. Short, pulsating bursts of electromagnetic waves are emitted at various frequencies to restore, detoxify and improve the health of cells.

In “PEMF: The Fifth Element of Health,” Bryant A. Meyers explains that PEMF works by “improving adenosine triphosphate [ATP] production, increasing oxygenation, enhancing circulation, promoting hydration, facilitating detoxification,” and improving the overall absorption of nutrients.

Health & Wellness Benefits of PEMF

Damaged and dysfunctional cells can contribute to a wide range of health issues, from physical pain to mood disorders such as depression. As such, PEMF can play a critical role in aiding the body’s healing systems by restoring cellular health.

Wellness centers use PEMF to help patients with numerous health outcomes and wellness benefits, including:

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Reducing pain, inflammation, stiffness and swelling

  • Improving circulation

  • Improving metabolic rate

  • Increasing oxygenation in the cells

  • Improving joint flexibility and range of motion

  • Reducing recovery times from injuries, training and illness

  • Increasing bone density

  • Relieving stress and anxiety

  • Increasing overall energy, vitality and performance

  • Reducing the symptoms of depression

  • Improving sleep quality

In addition to promoting overall wellness, PEMF therapy has been shown in a growing body of medical research and clinical trials to be an effective healing modality for an extensive range of specific health conditions, including Alzheimer’s, sciatica, Arthritis, Stroke recovery, Parkinson’s, Lyme disease, asthma, migraines and cancer, among others.

Practitioners at the Nutritional Wellness Center in Ithaca, NY, write: “PEMF is quickly gaining attention as a non-invasive way to approach injuries, chronic pain and even chronic conditions like depression and diabetes.

There are more than 2,000 University Clinical Studies on PEMF proving the benefits with no observed adverse effects.”

How PEMF Therapy is Administered

PEMF therapy can be administered with full-body mats and localized applicators, depending on the specific ailment or health objective.

In the case of full-body mats, patients typically lie down on the mat for 30 to 60 minutes as the mat gently emits the magnetic energy at a frequency set by the practitioner. Sessions can be anywhere from daily to weekly, depending on the goal. Some wellness centers set recommendations for the minimum number of sessions in order to gauge response and make adjustments as needed.

The brief sessions and overall ease of the practice are additional benefits that make PEMF attractive to both patients and the wellness centers that offer it.
